How to Dehydrate Oranges

Here is the easy recipe for how to dehydrate oranges using either a food dehydrator or an oven. Both techniques will give you delicious orange slices and orange peel to use in recipes, drinks or to eat as a snack.

I have included the food dehydrator method for orange slices, as well as how to dehydrate oranges in the oven.

Can you Dehydrate Oranges?

Yes, you can! It is simple to make dehydrated oranges.

The key to getting this citrus fruit to dehydrate properly is to bake for a long time at a low heat.

When making dried orange slices, they key is to slice them thinly so that they will dry. You wouldn’t want to have a 1/2-inch thick slice of orange and try to get it to dehydrate.

Can I Use an Oven to Dehydrate Oranges?

Dehydrating oranges in an oven is easy. If you don’t have a food dehydrator, you can still get excellent results by using a low temperature in an oven.

Place thinly sliced oranges on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Set your oven as low as possible. Place the tray in the oven and let dry for 8-10 hours. Start checking every 30 minutes after the 8 hour mark to check on their consistency and dryness.

Do I Remove the Peel on the Orange?

Whether or not you remove the orange peel before dehydrating is up to you. It’s a personal preference.

If you leave the peel on, the oranges will look nice. But you might not like the texture of the peel. You can also make dehydrated orange peel by adding just the peels to the dehydrator.

Dehydrated orange peels are especially nice for drinks, cocktails, teas and baking.

If leaving the peel on, make sure to wash it thoroughly to remove any dirt, residue or pesticides on the outer skin. You can use a produce wash to ensure the peel is edible. If you are intending to eat the peel, I suggest using organic oranges.

One reply on “How to Dehydrate Oranges”

Hi! Thanks for the recipe and tips. I used a dehydrator to dry my oranges. The peels are dry and there is a snap when I break one of them in half, but the flesh still seems a bit tacky.
